Edden and Talya's Bar Mitzvah celebration will be held online on the gather.town platform. This is a fun and simple interactive environment, where where you will be able to walk around the event space (using the arrow keys on your keyboard) and interact with others through audio and video.
Requirements for connecting: a laptop or desktop computer (mac, windows or linux) is required to connect, but you do not need to install any software---just follow the link gather.bartom.family to enter the party. A very limited mobile/tablet interface is also available, but it supports only audio with no video, doesn't support any of the interactive features, and doesn't look nice visually---we strongly recommend you connect from a laptop or desktop computer.
Using gather.town is very simple, even if you didn't grow up playing video games or didn't spend the last year interacting with the world through your computer screen.
If multiple people in your household will be joining, you can all join on the same computer, move around the space, and talk with people together. Or, especially if people are of different age groups, you might want to join on separate computers so that you can move around independently, and have separate conversations and participate in activities separately. This is just like in a real physical bar mitzvah you probably won't all stay stuck to each other, and will likely engage differently.
Additional information can be found here.
Edden turned 13 last year and his Bar Mitzvah was scheduled for May 9th, 2020. Covid had other plans, and services and the celebration were postponed. However, there was a silver lining: both kids were thrilled to plan a celebration together, and so this year we will celebrate Edden's postponed Bar Mitzvah, and Talya's Bat Mitzvah as she turns 12.
